Optimizing Your Virtual Performance

Jim Lubinski, Head Triathlon Coach, TOWER 26

You’ve put in the time to set up your virtual training platform (Zwift, TrainerRoad, Rouvy, Sufferfest) and it is…

READY TO GO!!!

Now what?

If you want to get the most out of your virtual training and racing, let’s address a few areas to help you make positive gains.  The initial set up time is worth it.  Stay engaged and plan your schedule to join in the fun.  With a proper set up, you to will continue coming back for more.

#1.  Get comfortable with the platform.

First, jump on the platform of your choice.  Start with a simple ride or run in your new virtual world and take in the environmental experience.  Connect with other athletes around the world and their virtual ‘avatars.’ Get the feel for shifting gears if on a smart trainer, or adjust to power output reading on your classic trainer.

#2.  What’s a Watt?

Virtual riding is based on your power to weight ratio, which may be a new calculation for some. (Maximum power in watts / your weight in kilograms.)

Reported speed is based on how much power you are outputting divided by your weight in kilograms.  Having correct input data within your platform results in accurate power and speed output.  With so many riders of different ability levels competing against each other, true readings will keep the playing, training, and racing field fair for all.

#3.  Start training with structured workouts.

A great benefit of virtual platforms are structured workouts, with varying time and intensity.  These workouts offer the rider a focus within each workout.  A program, such as TOWER 26 Triathlon Training, leads you through progressive sets, including specific power goals on the bike, and pacing on the run.  These workouts are designed by world-class coaches, training you to be stronger and more performance prepared when the time comes.

#4.  Join Group Rides & Races.

The most fun part of the virtual world (we think!) is the ability to ride with a group or race against your peers from the comfort of your own home.  Events may vary in distance and terrain, but are extremely realistic.

The virtual training world provides an amazing opportunity to optimize your fitness level during this time, achieve training goals, and crush racing opportunities in a fun, entertaining environment, without ever leaving your home.
